"
The experiences I have had as an avid gardener for the past thirty years have deepened my connection to the natural world and inspired my oil paintings. The longer I look at nature the more I see its intensity and vivacity. As I garden, I examine the plants, flowers, leaves, and fruits of my beds and borders so closely that it creates a kind of intimacy that I find very seductive. My challenge then becomes to transform this pleasurable task of looking and describing into a painting that portrays deep feelings. Thus light plays a major role in my gardening and artwork because I believe it is a universal communicator. I spend time bouncing light on and around my artistic arrangements until I find the moment when something clicks. More often than not, my paintings simply communicate the beauty in something I have observed that is more complex. Occasionally in my paintings, I enjoy a narrative detour and challenge the observer to invent his or her own story. However, the essence of painting for me is always its ability to intensify my experiences of life; it is a gift."
